At Switchee, we believe that everyone deserves to live in a decent home and that the environments we inhabit have a massive influence on our ability to enjoy life and prosper.
One in five households in the UK live in social housing, a sector with the right values at its core but that has historically struggled to deploy innovations in the home. Many residents still can’t afford to heat their homes, and live in cold, mouldy properties they can’t be proud of.
We believe that radical innovation in internet-connected technology can ensure that every resident, every day, is living in a home that allows them to succeed. That’s why our products are built not just on great technology, but on an understanding of what people want from the space they live in.
This approach led us to reimagine the most mundane household object: the thermostat, into a product that automatically reduces energy bills, looks great, and offers control to those who want it. We are also revolutionising the way social landlords manage their housing stock with an obsessively tailored SaaS property dashboard and handy alerts on things like when the boiler is going to break.
Our goal is to perfect the ultimate connected hub for the social home. It’s going to revolutionise the way residents interact with their homes and landlords manage their properties.
We are looking for a proven manager with a strong background in embedded software development to lead Switchee’s Devices team. You will be responsible for development of Switchee’s industry-leading smart thermostats, providing technical leadership and managing our growing team of firmware and electronics engineers.
Switchee’s smart thermostats are a critical part of our product; they enable residents to save money and energy, let landlords pro actively address issues such as mould and damp and collect the data that lets landlords make effective decisions about the energy saving improvements that really work. We are at the cutting edge of social housing adoption of green technologies, playing a critical role in getting the sector to net zero carbon emissions.
Lead the development of Switchee’s smart thermostats (both firmware and electronics); helping to set Switchee's Devices strategy and then owning execution to deliver on it
Coach, mentor and develop the high-performing engineers in your team; ensure that everyone gets regular feedback and makes progress towards personal and professional goals
Challenge engineers on system design, approach to problem solving or the balance of trade-offs. Perform code, design and architecture reviews to help the team maintain quality and decrease technical debt. You are not afraid to dive into a very technical conversation.
Drive the evolution of our architecture, tools and processes; research future options and technologies
Dive deep into product issues to ensure the quality, reliability and security of Switchee devices in the field
Make the Devices team a great place to work
You will work closely with the Product team to define the roadmap, the Data team to ensure that we’re capturing the right sensor data to power future data science and the Cloud team to enable in-field devices to be managed. You will also work closely with our QA team to ensure we hit the right quality levels, the manufacturing team to ensure that Switchee's thermostats can be manufactured cheaply and reliably, and the Ops team to ensure that in-field issues are investigated and resolved. You will report into the Head of Product Engineering.
Switchee operates a small, close-knit team with a big job to do so you'll be expected to roll-up your sleeves and get stuck in!
Who You Are
You’ll be a great fit if you:
Have proven experience in embedded firmware development. While this role is not hands-on dev, you still consider yourself an engineer at heart.
Have successfully led a development team to ship high quality products in a fast paced environment. You have managed direct reports before and have experience coaching and developing others and leading a motivated team
Have an ability to take large, complex projects and break them down into manageable pieces, develop functional specifications, then deliver them in a successful and timely manner
Are someone who takes ownership and is comfortable with ambiguity. You provide clarity and make things happen
Bonus points for:
Degree in Computer Science, Electronics Engineering or similar discipline
Background in firmware development in embedded C; ideally for ARM-based micro-controllers with ARM GCC toolchain; Python also useful
Previous involvement in electronics design, test and manufacture (inc DFM and production processes)
Experience with IoT devices and sensor data, AWS IoT frameworks for device management and Secure By Design
Experience with wireless protocols (esp. GSM and ZWave) and wired protocols such as M-Bus, Modbus, OpenTherm
Knowledge of heating controls, heating control algorithms and bus interfaces for boilers, heat pumps and energy stores
You have managed engineering teams at startups before, particularly during periods of rapid growth and organizational change.
You have experience designing and rolling out engineering practices — e.g., code reviews, continuous integration, static analysis toolsets — where they didn't exist before.
