Our Mission
At Switchee, we believe that everyone deserves to live in a decent home and that the environments we inhabit have a massive influence on our ability to enjoy life and prosper. One in five households in the UK live in social housing, a sector with the right values at its core but that has historically struggled to deploy innovations in the home. Many residents still can’t afford to heat their homes, and live in cold, mouldy properties they can’t be proud of.
We believe that radical innovation in internet-connected technology can ensure that every resident, every day, is living in a home that allows them to succeed. That’s why our products are built not just on great technology, but on an understanding of what people want from the space they live in.
This approach led us to reimagine the most mundane household object: the thermostat, into a product that automatically reduces energy bills, looks great, and offers control to those who want it. We are also revolutionising the way social landlords manage their housing stock with an obsessively tailored SaaS property dashboard and handy alerts on things like when the boiler is going to break.
Our goal is to perfect the ultimate connected hub for the social home. It’s going to revolutionise the way residents interact with their homes and landlords manage their properties.
The Role
We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join Switchee’s growing Data team and take a leading role in building out our Data Platform.
Data is critical to Switchee’s future. The insights we generate help tenants in social housing save money and energy and live more comfortably. They also help social landlords manage their properties more effectively so they can increase their reach, helping more people and targeting their resources most effectively.
We are at the cutting edge of social housing adoption of green technologies, playing a critical role in getting the sector to net zero carbon emissions. A key goal of the Data team is to use data to clearly tell the stories that enable tenants to understand their energy usage and to deliver the nudges that help them use their heating systems efficiently. This will save them money while also reducing their carbon footprint.
In all of this, our Data Platform is vital in underpinning any and all analytical work, and is of extreme importance as Switchee scales. Your work will help to ensure that we can effectively turn data into insights and clear actions that we can deliver t
Your Responsibilities
Your key responsibilities include the following:
Work closely with the Data and Cloud Leads to design and build out Switchee’s Lakehouse Data Platform to provide high quality enriched data to internal and external stakeholders.
Model data requirements, data sources and data flows to bring order and structure to data product development.
Design, develop, test, monitor and maintain data pipelines using tools such as Spark.
Ensure high data quality is maintained as far as possible by addressing issues at source, and implement rigorous processes (e.g. data contracts) to support this.
Work with the Data Lead on data management and governance initiatives, such as the implementation and maintenance of our enterprise-wide data catalogue.
Ensure best practice is followed with all of your work, such as maintaining good standards of documentation, source controlling your code and following appropriate deployment processes.
Proactively identify external/industry data sets to support our analytics and insights offerings, engaging with partners as appropriate to integrate this data within our data platform.
Mentoring of Junior Data Engineers as the data team scales.
You will work closely with the Data and Cloud teams to deliver production infrastructure and data products, and the Devices team regarding the raw data received from Switchee’s IoT devices in the field. You will focus on leading the design and build of Switchee’s Data Platform, developing and maintaining both batch and streaming data pipelines to serve high quality data to enable our analytical use cases. You will report into the Data Lead with a dotted line to the Cloud Lead.
